The part-time MA Music Therapy course at the University of South Wales is the only course of its kind in Wales. It is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council and provides opportunities to those who want to enter the music therapy profession.

MA Music Therapy is at the cutting edge of evolving music therapy practice. It has roots in relational aspects of music therapy practice and uses a psychodynamic underpinning to aid reflective thinking and practice. The course is perfect for musicians and practitioners from a variety of backgrounds.
A number of experienced researchers and practitioners teaches the course. Many lecturers who teach on the course have presented nationally and internationally and regularly contribute to peer reviewed journals.
Elizabeth Coombes, MA Music Therapy Course Leader, is the Book Review Editor for Approaches: An International Journal of Music Therapy. Elizabeth is currently working on her PhD with a focus on music therapy in neonatal care. She is interested in the democratisation of therapy. She has developed therapeutic music skill sharing training for teachers and healthcare professionals worldwide. She has carried this out in parts of the world where access to music therapy is limited. She has also used these methods of training in the UK. She has recently co-edited a book about music therapy and autism spectrum conditions with Jessica Kingsley Publishers.
Beth Pickard is a Senior Lecturer and PhD student at the University of South Wales. Her music therapy practice is aligned with an affirmative interpretation of disability, informed by her research in Critical Disability Studies. Beth’s PhD research explores how disability is socially constructed, interpreted and represented across disciplines and pedagogy.
Other team members have research interests such as clinical improvisation, music therapy supervision and music therapy and adult mental health.
